Making the Bed & Bathing the Patient

Making a Bed

1.      Why do we need to know how to make an unoccupied and occupied bed?

It’s simply because it is one of the factors to make the patient feel comfortable. Unoccupied and occupied bed are different things. It involves different procedure. You must always know how to make the unoccupied bed, cause it involves the basic procedures. When you already know how, it’s time to level up your knowledge and try to make the occupied bed. You must always get a companion to do it.

2.      How does making a bed help in the fast recovery of our patient?

Making a bed is making your patient more comfortable. The patient needs comfortable bed to lessen the pain and make them recover faster. Just think of it; the patient usually lay in their bed because they are sick. Now you can see and answer it for yourself why.

3.      As a good home nurse, how will you be able to render your services to your patient through bed making?

You must have the patience to do it. Bed making is not that easy. It requires you to understand and consider your patient’s situation or condition. Make them feel that every procedure you make is your love you are giving them. Make them feel that you belong together. And by these steps, you can show or render your services to your patient.

Bathing the Patient

1.      Why do you need to give a bath to the patient?

Just imagine yourself not taking a bath for a day. How do you feel? You feel gross and not relaxed at all. So, the importance of bathing a patient is to relax, to cleanse, to circulate their blood, and also to remove dirt causing bacteria.

2.      What are the materials needed for bath or sponge bath?

You basically need sponge, towel, water and yourself. You need patience after all. You must feel the patient’s condition and you must always be careful. So that everything will be alright. And time will be over and sickness will be over too.

3.      What’s the importance of using a urinal or bedpan?

The importance is that, the patient will not be able to exert more effort in going to the comfort room. It is more convenient to use it because all you need is to understand the patient and be cool. Just keep calm and administer them.

4.      What do you mean by back rub?

Back rub is cleansing the back of the patient. It is refreshing and relaxing. You need an alcohol or baby oil to sooth the patient’s feeling.

5.      How do you differentiate cold compress from hot compress?

Cold compress is used when the patient is sick. While hot compress is used when he/she is injured or suffering from accident.

Home Nursing Techniques; Signs & Symptoms of Illnesses & Diseases

1.       If you are a good home nurse, what the various home nursing techniques that you need to apply that will make the patient feel comfortable and speed up recovery?

For me, wearing a smile on your face will help the patient to think positively and not to think about that he/she is going to suffer. You make the patient feel that he/she will get into it and will be better in no time. Another is that always be cheerful and attentive, this will make you more comfortable with the patient and to worry less. These will surely help the patient to recover faster.

2.       Why should the home nurse monitor the vital signs of the patient?

Monitoring the vital signs of the patient is very important part of home nursing. It can help you detect the changes in the conditions of the patient. If you are really concerned with the patient, you can monitor it every hour. It also can tell whether you are doing bad or good. You must also adapt to the patient’s routine.

3.       How do you take the body temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure of the patient?

To take the body temperature, well you must use the thermometer. First rule is that avoid touching the tip of the thermometer. For it is fragile and it will be put in body parts specifically, mouth, armpits, and anus. Just keep calm and get the body temperature of the patient.

Pulse rate, you must need your watch and your fingers. Place your index finger with your middle finger on the patient’s hand in line with the thumb. Feel the pulse and watch it with the ticking of the watch.

Respiratory rate, you’ll need a stethoscope. In doing so, you must place the headset on your ears, the chest piece on the patient’s chest. Ask the patient to breathe in and breathe out. And you can monitor his respiratory rate.

Lastly, you’ll need a stethoscope and a sphygmomanometer. Always remember to let the patient relax. Set all in and look for the rising and falling of the needle. And lastly, you’ll need to hear the first and the second beat as it goes down. The first beat is the one on top and the second will be at the bottom.

4.       What are some practices that the home nurse must follow that will promote comfort to the patient?

There are a lot of practices that the home nurse can follow. Maybe my answers in item number 1 suit here. Just go with the flow and handle the patient with care. It is very effective to practice because patients need rest. So, just go with the flow.
5.       How will you differentiate signs from symptoms of illnesses and diseases?

According to Answers, a symptom is subjective from the patient point of view. It is what the patient experiences about the illness, injury or disease. Basically, symptoms can only be experienced, they are not able to measure or observed. Some samples are: chills, numbness, fatigue and etc. Sign is an objective physical manifestation of illness, injury or disease.  It is something you can observe or measure. Like for example: rapid pulse, high temperature and etc.

6.       If you are the doctor, what will be your basis in giving the diagnosis for your patient?

To be sure enough, I’ll do some tests to observe the patient. This will be very effective and important. I’ll do everything for the patient

Right time, Right procedure, All Right

Administering of Medicines to the Patient

Administering of medicines to the patient is a tough topic for me. I have learned so much in this topic. We made some demonstrations and other stuff. But first, our teacher gave us some basic guides and tips about this particular topic. This topic is common but it is very important for every people without exception. It is all about administering medicine to the patient with the proper and right method and procedure.

I have learned so much about this topic. First is we must always handle with care. You must always know whether the medicine is for the eyes,  nose, or skin. Because for your every action, the life of the patient is behind with it. Another is that always contact the guide of the doctor. You must always seek for a professional doctor because your knowledge is not enough to give the patient its best condition ever. I have learned also that this is one of the cheapest and effective way to take care of the patient especially your love ones/ family member. Cheapest, in the sense that you don't need to pay for the bill in the hospital because it does not require to be admitted to the hospital. Effective, because it is the family member of yours who is taking care of you. You feel more comfortable with your companions in your family because it sticks the bond in you. Well, these are just the few of the many things I have learned in our topic.

As a summary, we must always be careful upon doing these actions. Because we never know what will happen next. Lastly, we must always seek for God's guidance. It is irony but it is the only way to have a good presence of mind and so that we must always feel good upon doing these actions.
